Fitzroy Square - Chema Madoz

I really like the black and white images produced by the Spanish photographer Chema Madoz. He makes takes novel, humorous approaches to everyday objects. I took this image in Fitzroy Square. The square lends its name to the district of Fitzrovia.

Pinhole Photo

I have started looking at pinhole photography and really like the style of images created. Pinhole cameras are the little lens-less things that kids make in grade school but they produce extremely vignetted black and whites. I like how it narrows the focus.

Flakey Szczecin

This was taken during a snowstorm in northwestern Poland. The swirling snow really helps to frame the shot.

London Street Lights (HDR)

This is an image of Soho in west London. The direct sunlight helps the HDR a bit and creates the neat ray effect. No tripod so it is still a little softer than I had hoped.

Globe

This is a four image panoramic fish eye of Hyde Park. I like the direct sunlight on the lake and the general unreality of the scene. This blog format doesn't treat wide angle panoramics very kindly so I had to downsize from the original.

Murdered

This ice had formed on one of the pillars constructed to remind visitors to Berlin about the Holocaust. Titled "The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe", it is the most powerful monument I have ever seen. The picture is taken at f/3.5 to ensure a narrow depth of field.

Berlin Morning Blur

This was taken as a B&W HDR of the Berlin Ostbahnhof train station. I am really interested in stark black and white contrasts with true white spaces. This is in part because of my recent interest in Alfred Stiglitz's early black and white work.

Berlin Train Tracks

This is another HDR image composite using 3 AEB images separated by 2 stops each. This hopefully allows for enhanced detail along the tracks, gravel, and ceiling. I converted this image to black and white because the weather conditions were poor in the Berlin train station and I enjoy the completely monochromatic sky.

This was taken under a bridge near the train station in Szczecin, Poland. Szczecin is a smaller town near the German border. The weather was snowing the entire time and the lighting pretty flat.

This is one of the old Communist style bicycles that flock the streets in China. I think this one is from the Forever company out of Shanghai. They break down every few kilometers but there are always repair men on the street corners.

Here's a bit of a minimalist black and white. I applied some minor vignetting around the edges. I am getting some inspiration from the prints by f/64 Group. It was a photography club in the '30s with some interesting ideas.

This is an image of the Seine River in Paris. It was taken in late afternoon when the sun jumps between cloud groups. The weather was quite windy at the time which accounts for the disturbances in the middle of the river.

Thames South Bank - 2nd Attempt

This is the 2nd posted attempt of the same session. The other attempt is a fish eye from closer to the railing. It is titled "Globes of Light" and is a few posts down. I wanted to get some of the brick texture in the front and generally spruce up the foreground. Due to the longer exposure time the woman taking the photograph at the center is a shadow of motion while the poser is in full form.

This fountain is in Trafalgar Square in the middle of London. The square was built to commemorate a English naval victory in the Napoleonic Wars. Nelson's Column is to the left of the fountain. This image was handheld in the closing bits of sunset. Taken on the same day as the previous post, the pair shows the vagaries of sunset light.

Globes of Light

This was taken on the South Bank of the Thames River. I used a fish-eye to round out the bridge. Only one of the street lights were turned on because it was still quite light outside. I used a new technique to reduce chromatic aberration the results of which I am very pleased.

This is the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The image is a compilation of 4 images stitched together. I hope you enjoy it. The HDR (high dynamic range) helps to illuminate the details of the architecture.

This was an experiment in light. The construction light reminds me of a shower head. It was taken with a yellow sheet in the background and blue face paint.

Blue Arch

This is the new St. Pancras station. The Eurostar departs from here to go under the English Channel and into Paris' Gare du Nord. It is an old building that was recently remodelled. Also, right behind the blue sign there is the largest continuous champagne bar in Europe.

This is the exterior of Christ Church college in Oxford. I believe that is the chapel. There were organs and choir folk singing inside.

Experimenting with Water

A little bit more of 'studio' experimental photography. This was one of the first times I have ever tried to really organize lighting conditions etc. The fabric underneath the phone is corduroy. I especially like the edges of the water splatter.

This is inside one of the biggest colleges in Oxford, New College. It is in one of those cloistered walkways suspiciously similar to Hogwarts. This shot was handheld and tonemapped using Photomatix.

A New Effort

Siene River, Paris

This was taken of the Siene river in downtown Paris. If you turn the other way the Eiffel Tower is looming overhead. The rays are achieved through a combination of long exposure times and the tighter aperture that f/16 provides.

Guatemala Convent

A destroyed church in Antigua near Guatemala City. This shot is handheld. In two out of three of the blended images the upper bricks aren't visible and only when all three are combined does the full exposure gain interest.
